CoolSculpting Pre-Treatment Instructions
- Health and Medical Considerations
Please notify your provider before your appointment if you:
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Have a history of cold-related conditions (including cryoglobulinemia, cold agglutinin disease, or cold urticaria)
- Have a hernia, prior surgery, or implanted mesh in the treatment area
- Have nerve disorders, chronic pain syndromes, or reduced sensation in the area being treated
- Have a history of paradoxical adipose hyperplasia (PAH)
- Are on blood thinners or have a bleeding disorder
CoolSculpting may not be appropriate in these situations.
- Medications and Supplements
If medically appropriate, please:
- Avoid aspirin, NSAIDs (ibuprofen, naproxen), fish oil, vitamin E, and alcohol for 3–5 days prior to treatment to minimize bruising
- Continue prescribed medications unless directed otherwise by your provider
Do not stop prescription medications without medical guidance.
- Skin Preparation
- The treatment area must be free of rashes, open wounds, active infections, or skin irritation
- Avoid self-tanner, lotions, oils, or topical products on the area the day of treatment
- Shaving is not required
- Day-of Appointment
- Eat normally. Fasting is not required.
- Stay well hydrated before your appointment.
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing.
- Plan to be at your appointment for the full duration of your treatment cycle(s).
No numbing cream or anesthesia is needed.
- Expectations Before Treatment
- Results develop gradually over several weeks.
- Multiple treatment cycles may be recommended for optimal results.
- CoolSculpting reduces fat but is not a weight-loss procedure.
- Mild discomfort, pulling, pressure, cold sensation, or numbness during treatment is normal and temporary.
- Documentation
Before treatment, you may be asked to:
- Review and sign informed consent
- Have photos taken for clinical documentation and progress tracking
- Confirm your treatment plan and target areas with your provider

- What to Expect After Treatment
Common and expected effects may include:
- Redness, swelling, firmness, or tenderness
- Bruising
- Numbness, tingling, itching, or sensitivity
- A feeling of fullness or tightness in the treated area
These symptoms typically improve over days to weeks and vary by individual and treatment area.
- Activity and Daily Routine
- You may return to normal activities immediately.
- Drink plenty of water to keep hydrated and drain lymphatic system
- Light exercise and walking are encouraged.
- Avoid strenuous workouts or intense abdominal/core exercise for 24–48 hours, if the treated area feels sore.
- There are no required work restrictions.
- Pain, Discomfort, and Swelling
- Mild soreness or discomfort can be managed with acetaminophen (Tylenol) if needed.
- Avoid NSAIDs (ibuprofen, naproxen) for the first 24 hours unless otherwise directed.
- Gentle massage of the treated area may help with tenderness and swelling.
- Wearing comfortable, non-restrictive clothing is recommended.
- Skin Care
- Keep the treated area clean and dry.
- You may shower the same day.
- Avoid hot tubs, saunas, or very hot baths for 24 hours.
- Avoid applying heat directly to the treated area.
- Resume normal skincare products unless irritation occurs.
- Results Timeline
- Initial changes may be noticed as early as 3–4 weeks.
- More visible fat reduction typically appears around 8–12 weeks.
- Final results are seen at approximately 3–4 months.
- Additional treatments may be recommended depending on your goals.
Maintaining a stable weight and healthy lifestyle helps preserve results.
- When to Contact the Office
Please contact the clinic if you experience:
- Severe or worsening pain not improving over time
- Increasing firmness or enlargement of fat in the treated area weeks to months later
- Signs of infection (increasing redness, warmth, drainage, or fever)
- Any symptoms that feel unusual or concerning
Rarely, a condition called paradoxical adipose hyperplasia (PAH) can occur, which presents as firm fat enlargement months after treatment and requires medical evaluation.
- Follow-Up
- Follow-up visits or progress photos may be scheduled to assess results.
Treatment areas should not be retreated for at least 4–6 weeks, if additional sessions are planned.
