IPL Photofacial Q & A
Am I a good candidate for IPL Photofacial?
IPL works best for patients with lighter skin tones and specific concerns like sun damage, redness, and visible blood vessels. IPL may not be recommended for individuals with melasma, raised scars, very uneven pigmentation, or deeper skin tones due to a higher risk of pigment changes. Certain medications and recent sun exposure may also affect candidacy or timing of treatment. Your provider will review your skin type, goals, and medical history to recommend the safest and most effective treatment plan.
What concerns can IPL help improve?
IPL uses light energy to reduce the appearance of common skin concerns caused by sun damage and visible blood vessels, including:
- Sun damage
- Age spots and freckles
- Broken capillaries and visible blood vessels
- Facial redness associated with rosacea
- Spider veins (in select areas)
How many treatments will I need?
Most patients need a series of treatments to achieve the best improvement in pigmentation, redness, and overall skin tone. A common recommendation is about 3–5 sessions, usually spaced 3–6 weeks apart, depending on your specific skin concerns and goals.
When will I see results, and how long do they last?
Most patients notice a visible improvement within the first week after treatment with continued improvement over several weeks as the skin naturally renews itself. With proper sun protection and skincare, results can last several months to a year. Annual or occasional maintenance treatments are commonly recommended to keep results looking fresh.
What kind of downtime should I expect?
IPL is considered a minimal downtime procedure. Most patients can return to their normal activities right away. You may experience:
- Mild redness or warmth immediately after treatment
- Temporary darkening of treated spots before they flake off
- Slight swelling or tenderness for a short time
These effects typically resolve within a few days, and most people feel comfortable with daily activities soon after treatment
