Non-Ablative Laser Pre-Treatment Instructions
To ensure the safest treatment and best possible results, please carefully follow the guidelines below:
1–2 Weeks Before Treatment
- Avoid sun exposure and tanning beds. Skin should not be sunburned or actively tanned.
- Use daily SPF 30+
- Discontinue use of:
- Retinoids (Retin-A, tretinoin, adapalene)
- Retinol products
- Glycolic/salicylic acids
- Exfoliating scrubs or brushes
- Hydroquinone (unless otherwise directed)
- Avoid waxing, threading, depilatories, or laser hair removal in the treatment area.
- Do not undergo other laser or aggressive treatments in the same area.
3–5 Days Before Treatment
- Stop all exfoliating products.
- Avoid chemical peels or enzyme treatments.
- Avoid self-tanners.
- Stay well hydrated.
- Start Alastin Regenerating Skin Nectar Twice daily- by utilizing this product 2-3 days prior may help speed up recover
24–48 Hours Before Treatment
- Avoid alcohol.
- Avoid anti-inflammatory medications (ibuprofen, naproxen) unless medically necessary.
- Avoid strenuous exercise the day of treatment.
- If you have a history of cold sores (herpes simplex), notify the office — you may require prophylactic antiviral medication.
Day of Treatment
- Arrive with clean skin — no makeup, lotion, sunscreen, or perfume in the treatment area.
- Shave the treatment area if instructed (do not wax).
- Wear comfortable clothing if treating body areas.
- Bring sunglasses or a hat if treating the face.
Please Inform Us If You Have:
- Active cold sores or infection in the treatment area
- Recent sunburn
- History of keloid scarring
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Use of isotretinoin (Accutane) within the past 6–12 months
- Any new medications or medical conditions
Following these instructions helps reduce risk of pigmentation changes, irritation, and delayed healing while optimizing your results.
Non-Ablative Laser Post-Treatment Instructions
After your non-ablative laser treatment, your skin will begin a natural healing and collagen-building process. Please follow the instructions below to promote proper recovery and optimal results.
1. What to Expect
Normal and temporary side effects may include:
- Redness or flushing (often similar to a mild sunburn)
- Swelling or puffiness, especially around the eyes
- Warmth or tightness
- Mild tenderness
- Darkening of pigment or bronzing in treated areas
These effects typically improve within 24–72 hours, though mild sensitivity may last longer.
2. Skin Care Immediately After Treatment
- Keep the treated area clean and dry.
- You may gently cleanse the area the evening of treatment or the following morning using a mild, non-exfoliating cleanser.
- Apply Alastin Skin Nectar Twice daily for 3 days
- Apply a gentle moisturizer as needed to reduce dryness or tightness.
- Avoid rubbing, scrubbing, or picking the skin.
3. Sun Protection (Very Important)
- Avoid direct sun exposure for at least 7–10 days.
- Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen SPF 30+ or higher daily.
- Wear a wide-brimmed hat or protective clothing outdoors.
- Avoid tanning beds and self-tanners until fully healed.
Sun exposure too soon after treatment increases the risk of pigmentation changes.
4. Products to Avoid
For 5–7 days after treatment, avoid:
- Retinoids (retinol, tretinoin)
- Exfoliating acids (AHA, BHA, glycolic, salicylic)
- Benzoyl peroxide
- Scrubs, brushes, or exfoliating devices
- Fragranced or irritating skincare products
Resume active products only once the skin has fully recovered or as directed by your provider.
5. Makeup, Exercise, and Heat
- Makeup may be applied after 24 hours, once redness has subsided.
- Avoid strenuous exercise, excessive sweating, saunas, hot tubs, and very hot showers for 24–48 hours.
- Avoid direct heat exposure to the treated area during this time.
6. Comfort Measures
- Utlizing a fan may help with the heat, do not apply cold compresses, the heat contributes to the results.
- Acetaminophen (Tylenol) may be taken if needed, not typically necessary.
7. Results and Treatment Course
- Improvements in skin texture and tone develop gradually over several weeks.
- Multiple sessions are usually recommended for best results.
- Your provider will advise on appropriate treatment intervals.
8. When to Contact the Office
Please contact the clinic if you experience:
- Increasing pain, swelling, or redness beyond 72 hours
- Blistering, crusting, or signs of infection
- Significant darkening of the skin that does not improve
- Any symptoms that feel unusual or concerning
