This mechanism is why people describe Kybella as shots that dissolve fat, which is loose language but not inaccurate. The word to be careful with is permanent. The specific cells destroyed do not return, but the fat cells left behind can still enlarge if you gain weight, so a meaningful weight increase after treatment can soften the result even though the treated cells are gone for good.

The mechanism also explains the recovery. Swelling is not an unfortunate side effect of the injections; it is the visible part of the process working. Your immune system is clearing cellular debris from beneath your chin, and that is inflammatory by design. We reassess the area before each session and stop when you have the result you came for, rather than committing you to a set number in advance, since some patients are satisfied after two and others genuinely need five.

Results are not immediate. Expect to judge nothing for at least four to six weeks after a session, because swelling masks the change. The clearest read comes about a month after your final treatment, once inflammation has fully resolved. We take standardized photos before session one, since the change accumulates slowly enough to be hard to see in a daily mirror.

One caveat worth raising at your consultation: Kybella removes fat but does nothing for skin elasticity.
